In my work, I want to use Dithizone as a reagent for detecting Zn. I have some question and I`d appreciate it if anybody helps me with these questions:
- What happens in the reaction between them?
- What PH is suitable for the reaction?
- Do you Know any other regent for Zn?
Zn coordinates with amine nitrogen ( may with Sulphur as well). In basic medium.
You can use any other metals, which have similar properties with Zn.
Dithizone can form coordination compound with Zn .The product will be colored useful for detection of Zn.
Dear Elnaz, many thanks for sharing this very interesting technical question with other RG members. Dithizone (= (1E)-3-anilino-1-phenylimino-thiourea) is a chelating ligand which is used for detecting and determining various heavy metals. It forms brightly colored 1:2 (metal : ligand) complexes e.g. with Fe, Mn, Cu, Co, Ni (purple); Bi, Sn, Cd, Zn, Pb (red) and Ag, Hg (yellow). The resulting complexes are insoluble in water. Their characteristic colors can be determined quantitatively by colorimetry.
In these complexes the dithizone ligands coordinate to the metal ions in its anionic form (dithizonate complexes). As illustrated in the attached schematic representation (which was taken from the German Wikipedia entry on the term dithizone), the coordination occurs through one of the N atoms and the central sulfur atom.

Zn2 + ions with dithizone C6H5-NH-N = C (SH) -N = N-C6H5 (diphenylthiocarbazone) form an intracomplex red salt soluble in chloroform (CHCl3).
