Need more details. 'Waste' in what way? Process water? Sanitary sewage? Stormwater runoff?

Perhaps nitrifying bacteria could be encourage to thrive in the sewage to change the pH from acidity to alkalinity

This can be good practice for biodegradation process because bacteria do not tolerate high concentration od heavy metalas. However, sludge from the reactor will be rich in heavy metals thus a wise sludge handling is needed.
pH of the wastewater significantly influence the surface charge the catalyst. So, based on my observations one should maintain pH of the wastewater solution depending on the nature (cationic or anionic) of the pollutant. Opposite charges attracts. Thus, opposite charges of catalyst and target pollutant will lead to more adsorption and hence more degradation or removal.
