I'm a bit confused by the choice of your model. Your work focuses on the language development, but your models don't have the ability to talk or interact with other partners with that kind of stimuli. Even though you perform cerebral tomography to scan the cerebral areas implicated in language, to later target the genes, your model needs to talk, or to have any form of language, in order to highlight the cerebral aeras.

Maybe, you should choose a model like primates, or a human being. But you will face biotethic issues.

I was wondering if there were orthologs of language genes in cichlids or other model organisms that, aside from language in higher creatures, have other functions that are conserved in the model organisms. For instance, Foxp2, which is involved in humans in oral and pharyngeal muscle control, is conserved in cichlids and is expressed in places other than the lung, e.g. in the swimbladder, in cichlid development:

I could perhaps do something similar (i.e. in-situ hybridization in developing embryos) of related genes.
