So nice question. I think ,there are many features (must) a supervisor have, like, he have to follow high standard academic ethics, published many papers in a trusted journals to reflect his recent thoughts and ideas about his specific topic and be in touch with the latest updated information in his field by participating in an international conferences, symposium and has an account on a scientific media like RG platform to facilitate communication with his students, on the other side, very cooperative, spend enough time with his students. I recommend that a supervisor have to guide not more 2 Ph.D. students and 4 M.Sc. students maximum.

Grouped the functions of supervision into three distinct areas:

Educational—helping the student achieve the necessary competence in research methodology to conduct independent research upon graduation

Administrative—guiding the student through the necessary internal and external protocols of a postdoctoral research project

Supportive—providing an appropriate level of emotional support for the student to feel capable in tackling a complex research project. This can vary from reassurance to inspirational and even “tough love” reminders of expectations if needed.

What's the difference between supervisors for master or Ph.D. students?

PhD supervisors required more competency & experience than master supervisors because PhD research is specific in knowledge contribution & the rigor of research is more stringent.

How many students a supervisor should guide in total at the same time?

This is vary from one supervisor to another as well as depending on which university the supervisor is working in.  E.g. I'd observed some supervisors were handling 2 to 10 supervisees at a time.

A good supervisor must have a vast knowledge of his/her field; must have researched widely and possess current knowledge of the discipline the student is interesting in. S/he must be disciplined, timely and a good motivator. S/he must be a role model, and be patient. S/he must be someone who adheres to ethics of research.
