Thank you for your reply Sir. This is an interesting perspective on factors for BI success; people factor is always working in background and does goes a long way in helping materialise small and big things.

Dear Rekha,

there are two ways for determining business intelligence success factors :

1. Investigation of available literature - demanding task since we are overloaded with journal and conference papers.

2. Staring an exploratory study in investigate which are the most influential factors. In this case you will start without perceived factors and collect them from study participants. Exploratory study should be based on qualitative research methods.

My favorite is the second approach, it is more creative you will get excellent experience from the field.

Due to my work experience in software industry i have made some observation which could translate into possible factors for BI success. But like you said, i am going stepwise, so it first review of literature  and expert opinions and then exploratory  study incase  what  i think is not already discussed.

I agree that the first step is short literature review, which will be followed with qualitative study. Several prominent qualitative researchers suggest that it is acceptable to do short literature review aiming at familiarization with the field of research.

3) Increase in Sales growth

I think only first two point that you have mentioned could be BI success factor the rest of the points are the outcomes or results  of the BI success.

At the risk of being seen as a troublemaker, the concept of success is one that is problematic in the literature. How do you know if a BI effort is successful? If the CEO says so? what if the actual users think its a waste of time and won't use it. If the models were developed on-time and in budget with the correct functionality? Lots of project have done that and yet been considered unsuccessful.

Like i said in my question initially i am also interested in knowing how to align  BI to business strategy. Because a BI project and for that matter any business project is considered successful if it meets the objective or the strategy of the business.

Success in the eyes of who? The CEO and executive leadership, the board of directors, the shareholders, the users within the business units? I would think that each group would define success in different terms, so I am very much in agreement with Dr. Cuellar. Rather than looking at BI success holistically, maybe looking at it from the perspective of different goups of people in varying roles would make for a more consistent definition business intelligence success.  

Agreed, but this is also a fact that business intelligence till today is a prerogative of decision makers in the organisation who are invariable the the C-class--CEO, COO, CIO etc

So from their perspective if BI is in alignment with Business strategy  and helps meet the set objectives than it is a success.

Diffusion of BI usage is yet to take place from top to bottom and it should to enable fact based decision making.

There are many success factors that can enhance business intelligence implementation in organizations. . Performance and efficiency is the main keys for success.
