I want to choose some commercially manufactured biochars as soil amendment to immobilized heavy metal. The biochars are already characterized but I want to know the features to be considered in choosing the biochars. I understand that a good biochars for metal adsorption must have large surface area and high phosphate content/phosphorus. What are other features to considered aside the feedstock choice?

we have done some study on biochar in Cu contaminated soils. We used a citrus wood biochar, which was quite effective in reducing the availability of Cu to sunflower in Cu contaminated soil (the papers are attached in my profile). I agree with Arif and Hani. In general I believe biochars from wood trees are more effective in that case, due to less nutrient contents, higher porosity and larger surface area.

Biochars soil liming ability - it's calcium carbonate equivalence (CCE) - is critical for metal immobilizing / sorption. Increasing soil alkalinity will immobilize most metals and thus high CCE chars are desirable, except for arsenic in which low CCE chars are likely favourable.
