What exactly is controlled for when entering a control variable into a simple moderation model (PROCESS model 1)?

Hello, I hope that someone can help. I am using PROCESS Model 1 to conduct a simple moderation analysis. I have entered 1 covariate (negative affectivity; NA) into the model in order to control for it. Using this particular tool, is the effect of NA on X AND Y controlled for, or JUST its effect on Y?

I have read the relevant sections in Hayes book and can't find anything but I am happy to be directed back to the book if I have missed something.
