Does functional electrical stimulation maintain motor end plate responsiveness for longer enabling recovery in distant muscles? It may be f benefit following motor nerve transfer in recruiting muscle fibres for co-ordiinated contraction and earlier functional recovery.
I did not find any RCT for the efficiency of FES in nerve repair recovery. But it is a popular method in our institution and it is applied routinely. It is certain that at least FES keeps the paralyzed distant muscles in a relatively good state through the stimulated muscle contarctures. Furthermore, FES contributes to preserve the mobility of the adjacent joints.
