I am currently working on my Masters Degree thesis and it revolves around the analysis of newspaper headlines. I would like to gain insight on what are the research ethics that encompass the circumstances of this research specifically the use of Newspaper headlines as your research subject.
Different countries have different copyright laws so it depends on which newspaper headlines you are thinking of. In the US anything before 1923 is public domain but after that copyright applies.
This is what the New York Times says about their headlines:
You are permitted to create your own summaries and to use New York Times headlines with links back to the articles located on NYTimes.com. But readers who visit NYTimes.com by clicking a link on your site cannot bypass the registration process.
