If I prepared a DES from choline chloride (ChCl) by quantifying ChCl by some means, what effect will the water have on the final product? How will HBD-HBA interaction be effected? Will a DES be formed at all under these conditions?
At low level of water, say because of moisture absorption during preparation and handling, the DES structure is not changed much. And it is believed that up to a threshold concentration, the DES structure resists hydration. So, I think in the presence of trace water DES will be formed. but obviously, interactions involved within its constituents might change significantly. So, physical properties like viscosity and polarity might change drastically
Smith et al. argued that Ethaline 200 (type of deep eutectic solvents) contains no more than 5%H2O, which corresponds to the reduction of H+ cations to H2.
