The blood stage is the only stage in the parasite life cycle that causes disease, a vaccine against this stage of the parasite life cycle would prevent or reduce severity and complications of the disease, and perhaps eliminate malaria if sterile immunity could be achieved. What does Sterile Immunity means in this case ?
Sterile immunity refers to complete protection. It has been achieved in case of liver stage of malaria through Immunization with irradiated sporozoites. To achieve such a level for blood stage the vaccine should be effective 100% in terms of eliminating the parasite. In reality none of the current vaccine candidate are even close to it. A 99% effective vaccine would be able to reduce pathology but will not give sterile protection.
