When I am calculating soil carbon storage Mg ha-1 on equivalent soil mass equation. How we can calculate EMS for different layers either it only calculate for surface soil or need to sum 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm data or need to average of 0-15 and 15-30 cm data as 0-30 cm. it is my request to senior scientists, kindly share comments and suggestion on equivalent soil mass equation.
For 0-15 and 15-30 cm layers you need to make SOC content on weighted mean average. For that you multiply SOC and depth difference (for 0-15 it is 15-0=15). Ans sum it up wth SOC and 30-15-15. Then divide twovalues by total depth ie 30-0=30.

If you are estimating the total mass of carbon in the top 30 cm of 1ha based on two measurements at 0-15 and 15-30 cm you would get the same answer if you sum the equivalent soil mass (which is the equivalent mass of soil in 1ha to your desired depth calculated knowing the SOC concentration, the volume of your layer and soil bulk density) for each layer or take the average of them the 30 cm.
Is it the conversion from soil concentration by mass (% or g/kg) to concentration by area (Mg/ha) that you are not sure about?
@Andrew Butler yes when i am calculating on the based on two measurements (0-15 and 15-30 answer come only for surface layer becasue we caluculate additional mass from sub-surface layer, so it would be same am i right. when we calucate separte for each layer than it come separate for 0-15 and 15-30 cm. yes i check both we can use g/kg or % into Mg ha-1
