Trying to summarize what it really takes to for a person to be well-known/recognized in his/her field of expertise. To be an an authority, the person to be asked .. etc
To share my opinion first, I do not think it is only by age and experience. Look at guys like: Jacob Lurie, Terence Tao, John Nash .. etc (in their 20s and 30s when they have become an authority and famous in their fields). IQ plus hard work might be two ingredients, but there is more into it I think.
I can see that RG has great researchers that have great communication skills and developed great work. I was hoping that each person share the methodology/steps he/she followed to become at what he/she is today.

- Perseverance in reading and research
- Diversity in types of work carried out in your field (diversity in subspecialties for your specialty).
- Emphasis on linking the theoretical and practical side.
- Continuous communication with others in your field or terms of reference nearby.
- Help the others in solving your problems that related to your field, and advise them.
- Active participation in lectures, workshops and conferences in your field.

Being an authority means to be different and to stand out from the crowd. It means to become a leader and an expert in learning your craft. Notice, I did not say it means to be an expert of your craft. The first rule of being an expert is to acknowledge you will never be one. All anyone can ever do is try to educate themselves on their craft with as little bias and agenda as possible.
Dear @Khaldoon , I have never considered myself to be an authority or top person in the field. Hard work brings people to the top, but top is always far enough.Healthy and positive competition brings a good results in this favour.

Many thanks for your answer. What I have meant by the word top, is to be the number one person to be asked in a certain field. Example, Terence Tao: Prime Numbers, Jacob Lurie: derived algebraic geometry .. etc. The number one person that if I have a doubt in a certain topic and I see his/her name, I know I am referring to the person with most knowledge about that topic.
Thanks for pointing this out, I have changed to word "top" to "well-known/recognized" since I think these two words serve almost the same purpose in this question.
To get a considerable knowledge and mastery over one's area concerned, he must learn and do research for long long time. I think the expertise and authority are relative and can not precisely mention. The quality of your works and the way you approach your works will make you well-known, popular and will bring the recognition as well.
