Art is about touching the creative source inside ourselves. For Einstein, insight did not come from logic or mathematics. It came, as it does for artists, from intuition and inspiration. This cannot be taught, it can only be discovered. So I guess any student of art, has to forget all he or she is taught, and connect through his or her passion with the deeper Self. Maybe this is not taught of talked about in art school, but it is vital if he or she is to really produce art - this however will not be commercial art but authentic art.
If you looking for the academic standards specify what students should know and be able to do, I recommend you to see standards from the National Association of School of Art and Design (NASAD) in the USA. As the NASAD is regarded for academic accreditation in all art disciplines include art teacher preparation. Also, it's depended on what type of students you looking for art they at the higher education institutions or school students. As we all might know that there has been growing interest in the USA, UK and other part of the world to establish standards for the artists or art teacher preparation in pre-service Art Education. Some of examples of this are; Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood/Art standards by National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, (NBPTS) – se this set of standards such as Standards for Art Teacher Preparation (NAEA, 1999a), Purposes, Principles, and Standards for School Art Programs (NAEA, 1999b), and The National Visual Arts Standards (1994a). All these standards help to define what a good Education in the Arts should provide and help to ensure the quality of the Art Education teachers. In addition, there have been attempts to set standards for the Art facilities and the surrounding environment through the Design Standards for School Art Facilities (1994b). Some of these standards have been updated in 2009 and more.
I hope this might help you especial the NASAD standards for the professional artists and I'm sure there is more for specific and more focused standards
There are principles that governs creativity (design) just as there are elements of arts which a student ought to know to be able to effectively produce any art work that will provoke the sense of aesthetic.
These principles and elements are what the student keep learning progressively through the course of academic exposure in an art institution.
Constant exposure and practice of what is learnt brings out the best in the child. Hence art is the ability to give out what one has already taken in. One dose not create a good work of art from the vacuum. It's always a result of what has been internalized over time.
That's why we believe that art can be taught. Drawing for instance are taught to those who never knew they could draw.
Sometimes children spent time watching how some things are done, they ask questions while answers are giving, though unofficially, these children are learning a lot. So much that when they begin to practice what they observed one may say they were not taught.
Finally, every art student should know the principles and elements of arts, and how to apply them in creating art works.
