This is one of the most competitive research area in communication engineering for the moment, because several new papers appear every week. If you are new to research, I would recommend looking for another topic, where there is less prior work to keep track of and potentially more open problems to consider. A good starting point is to read IEEE magazines and look for open problems that are mentioned there.

It is a rich research domain, especially those of us in security.
The performance analysis of IRS requires a combination of information theory and electromagnetic tools. I think that most of the papers investigated IRS-related problems using standard information theory tools and techniques that ignore inherent electromagnetic phenomena. So, you can analyze the IRS from an electromagnetic perspective in a novel way for 5G and beyond 5G wireless communications. Besides it, most of the researchers are working on an optimization perspective. They are optimizing the desired variables related to the resource allocation problems in IRS.
IRS can perform different operations such as reflect (beamforming techniques), refract(stealth technology), absorb (energy harvesting), polarisation(secure communication) as well as modulated data onto received signals. In short, you can analyze IRS from a different point of view. Therefore I will suggest you to start by reading the following survey paper related to IRS
