Do you think evolution is still gong on in human? If so, what are we going to be like after hundreds of thousands of years if we still exist somewhere in this universe?
There seems to be no reason to think that the evolutionary phenomenon has stopped. The anagenesis of the human being may be discontinued like other many lineages was extincted.
Javier was right, it doesn't seem evolution phenomenom has stopped or could stop. However, I do not think human race can exist till a million year without extinction considering at least the rate of population growth and industrialization.
I concur with Alex in many ways. Still, I think for the correct answer we need more science fiction than science. Yes, biotech manipulation of the human genome will come in the end, extinguishing lineages of genes, deleterious ones certainly, no more genetic diseases, directed evolution. We may manipulate the genome some more creating whole new lineages designed for crucial tasks, for distinct environments, adapted for living under no gravity (interstellar travel) or low gravity (the Moon, Mars?). Why not essentually change human biology so we get more efficient ecologically, using less energy, optimizing the use of materials, perhaps photosynthesising (is that word right?). Or something completely different might occur, as we all deciding to get electronic in nature to live as "computer minds", inside robots if we need to do material tasks. Therefore, we could extinguish the biological human species, changing so much that we could become something else completely. Told you it would sound as science fiction...
I am not so optimistic. What new phenotypes are this world selecting for human if evolution, at least at molecular level, is still going on ? We observed more diseases in human, reduced fecundity and lack of health, compared to people live before us long long ago. Selecting for fitness in evolution is to select for higher reproduction ability or fecundity. The ability to pass genes to offspring is the biological goal of evolution. What do you think evolution is select for in human? Better reproduction systems, or smarter brains, or better physical and spiritual health, or many others? Or select for a complex of all fitter traits?
In terms of the short term concerning our own society, I don't think any clear selection pattern can be found, sincerely. Apart from diseases (such as HIV-AIDS), which have their own specific pattern of selection, our Western-world life-style has a minimal effect on our fitness, at least in Central Countries (aka First World), since most people have minimum health and are able to reproduce and see their children grow. That is, if there were people with certain characteristics, who were leaving more children than the others, then you would have selection. But footballers, nerds stacking millions on computer industries or politicians, which hold more power and means (aka money) do no seem to have many more offspring than most other people have. Thus, there appears to be no selection going on in that sense, at least for me!!!
