As a former math faculty, I would say the major characteristics of a good math teacher is the one who make students feel math can be learnable, enjoyable, and applicable . The one who challenges him/her-self to overcome students' fear from mathematics, and the one who tries his/her best that his/her students' will enjoy learning math rather than just stuck the misconception or the "misconception" fact that math is a tough subject, therefore, student will find math one of the most hated subjects of study. You are very welcome! This specific characterization has to be studied using what is known as Advanced Mathematical Thinking processes. One particular area of current research interest is the Inquiry-Oriented Approach in math education and teaching. In other words, the current math education research studies how to apply Inquiry-Oriented Approach to undergraduate math classes.
