I measured the respiration rate and clearance rate of geoduck clam to determine their allometric coefficients. Since the final size of geoduck clam is nearly 1 kg, the comparison between species might be lame. If you have determined the allometric coefficients of RR and CR for a bivalve species which is similar size to mine, please let me know. Many thanks.

Hi Dung, I know that respiration rates for small animals are faster than respiration rates for large animals if it is calculated per unit body weight. I also know that filtration rates for zebra mussels are faster than the filtration rates of bivalves that are larger than them. I did a search and found a paper that relates respiration rate and clearance rate. I will give the reference or post the link shortly.

I think in general it is the case: the allometric coefficients for RR and CR differ. In filter feeders (e.g., bivalves), food intake directly depends on the volume of water processed per unit time, which in turn is proportional to the surface area of ciliated surfaces involved in filtering. Surface areas generally increase with mass with the power coefficient of 0.67, therefore CR is roughly proportional to size in the power of 0.67. In contrast, metabolic rate in general is proportional to mass with a power coefficient of about 0.75. You may consider the following references and the paper attached

Thank you very much for your opinion and references. Although I did not measure the gill surface area, I'll try to compare two coefficients in relation to the mass between species again. Since geoduck has huge amount of tissue compared to the shell weight and it lives for up to 160 years, I could not get my head around those coefficients.

He looked at allometrics, CR, gill surface area, dry tissue etc...between suspended and bottom culture oysters (C. virginica).
