Publons is a serious platform that initialy intended to promote open revieweing and academic recognition. It is now governed by Clarivate Analytics who also manages Web of Science, citation index, Endnote and ResearcherID who were previously owned by Thomson Reuters.

They have decided to fuse ResearcherID with Publons to offer a platform similar to ResearchID but also including metrics on reviewing.

This intrument therefore is to provide important metrics for scientists including H-indexes for publications in indexed journals.

Just would like to note that Elsevier has recently launched a somewhat similar service for referees for its own journals

Thank you for your answers. IMHO, semi-redundancy or even full redundancy of the availability of such data and services provides safe, and secure continuity of the data. Therefore, publons, Elsevier reviewer recognition, and similar platforms are all important, and appreciated by the relevant communities.

Got such a few days ago too. I feel it might be worth given a trial cos all these well known publishers didn't get to be well known in a day.

If your Institution gives your credits for review, then Publons is useful for you. I have had more invitation to review articles since I logged up to Publons.

I agree with you. At least, I can access the list my previous reviews easily.

Publons is a very useful platform to get review credits and keep track of records. previewing. It gives you credits for applying green card as well. Find attachment.

I think it is better if we can try this platform. In case there is any problem in the future, it can be discussed again in this forum. If somebody has already bad experience with publon, it may be better shared here, otherwise it can be an option to increase our research recognition.

I was also invited to be part of this platform. I'm going to register to see what it's like.

ResearcherID has recently merged with Publons. While this is good news as publons also includes verified peer reviews done by researchers, it still does not offer full range of features that ResearcherID used to offer (ie list of collaborators and who is citing the author etc) I hope this is covered by publons in the future. At the moment though publons does offer complementary access to WoS.

I use the publons as a reviewer, its useful platform to keep track of records.

BUT the key questions are: why businessmen like Clarivate Analytics spend money to establish this?

It’s easy, there is sound like « Why reviewers of the articles are not paid by the journals? », so they used a psychologic award for reviewers, it cited as (by Dickson Adom):

«Reviewers can sign up to publons.com so that they can use any paper they review to build up their CV on that platform for promotion and grant purposes. »

Because of this, publons don’t offer to an archive of reviews from None ISI journals! Like local ones; or books reviews. Its insufficient tools.

I suggest free platforms like researchgate offer this feature.

The merger screwed up a perfectly working service (ResearcherID). Now I cannot find and add publications from Web of Science, that I have published at my previous affiliations (search assumes affiliation, and it cannot be easily changed). Loading from Orcid produces a ton of crap. I used to use ResearchedID to get my metrics for proposals ets, as it used to be the most serious service for this. Now I may have to start using Scopus, as Publons just does not work.

Dear Janne, i think you can try contacting them for this issue. I had contacted for some issues and clarifications and they did answer to my satisfaction and in fact asked, whether there is any other aspects i like to clarify.

I have contacted them so lets see how it goes. This is the second "bug" I have found after merger and I really don't think I should put too much of my time try to figure out what works and what doesn't.

Well, Publons suggest that I add my old institutional emails to profile. Only problem being that the system send confirmation email to the added email addresses, to which I no longer have access to. Furthermore, I realized their Web of Science search only finds 1 out of 16 publications with my current affiliation, so there seems to be something very much wrong in their system.

The other option they suggest is to locate items in Web of Science and export them to Publons. Only that I get an error message "Your import failed for an unknown reason".

Seems that I need to start using some other metrics servise (e.g. Scopus).
