I know this is a difficult question but which one do you recommend to do machine learning: R or Python and why?
That's not an easy question, and mostly depends on your personal experience and field. Both languages are proficient in machine learning applications (python is easier to learn, but R is potentially faster as it is based on a lower level programming, though the work being made in the field for python libraries is exquisite).
If I had to choose, I'd go for Python, but mostly because the people nearby who do research in machine learning right now are using Python, and thus it would be more appropriate in case I needed a hand. It all depends on what do you need it for, and specially the resources at hand.

Actually, both software work very well in Machine Learning applications. Both have tremendous power and both have a very wide list of packages/libraries.
Python is easiest to learn, but R codes' are simpler.
However, I strongly reccomend you to choose Python, specially because is more used right now in this field, and if you would jump to Deep Learning in the future, absolutely Python is your best option.

To some extent, I agree with Juan D. Pineda-Jaramillo . However, if you mainly focus on statistical learning, then you probably want to use R over Python. R is mainly developed by statistician, so in my opinion, it is more mathematically/statistically elegant.

Both sofware are useful in machine learning. But as Xilei Zhao explained R is generally used in statistical application.
