We plan to identify the sizes of plastic in bodies of water from the surface using a device, but we are not so sure what to use best in order for us to identify it. Should we use infrared sensors, lasers, or something in order order to identify the size of the plastic?
The method involves the filtration of solids obtained in a 0.335 mm surface sampling net through 5.6-mm or 0.3-mm sieves to isolate the solid material of the appropriate size . The sieved material is dried to determine the solids mass in the sample detected by the use of infrared sensors, lasers etc.
It would depend on the size range of the plastic particles involved that would in turn dictate the wavelength of light to be used. One could use turbidimeter measurements of samples collected from various depths, compare and pick the one which produces the highest light attenuation. Following this the sample may be dried and sieved to determine the particle size distribution if needed.
A detector based density difference is appropriate. Ultrasound detector will serve the purpose.

As I understand your question that you want to detect and measure plastic debris from water surface. The ultrasound sensor can detect and measure it by dispersion. It can be calibrated by varying plastic density.
