Negative aspects might include- the transmission of bacteria that are detrimental to the health of Tilapia, or those that are going to consume the fish. Avoidance measures may be required. There are many positive aspects of using maggots- i.e. their availability; high protein content; acceptance by fish; they store well and can be used to encapsulate nutrients etc..
one major negative effect could be social acceptance. Maggots are produced from rotten carcass and this usually are very malodorous.Besides bacteria may be transferred when maggots are harvested washed and fed fresh. Consumers that are unaware may pose no problem. There could be possible pathogen transfer to the fish and fish hygienic welfare may be compromised. However in most cases maggot meal are made from dried out maggot that gets ground to dust. The maggot meal are now used. The heat of drying may reduce bacteria infection maybe to some extent.
Maggots are good sources of protein (40 and 60%) and lipids (9 to 25%). But maggots are carrier of pathogens and the inclusion of maggot meal in livestock diets raises concerns about potential transmission of diseases.
