Dear researchers, my specimen, silver diamine fluoride, seems to react with KBr and gives off ammonia when I try to mix it for FTIR testing. The color also changes to greenish brown. May I know what alternative carrier I can use for the testing of my sample? Thank you in advance.
You can try e.g. CsI or change the technique and use for instance attenuated total reflection (ATR) infrared spectroscopy.
Everything depends on your application.
KBr has a wide transmission range, but is hygroscopic. So you should work under vacuum. BaF2 or CaF2 do tolerate higher levels of humidity, but have reduced transmission around 10 or 11 micron. If you work at lower wavelengths ZnSe might also be an interesting option, but there are strong losses within the material and handling requires care because the material is toxic.
You can find transmission curves for all these materials on the internet, especially at companies who are specialised in the fabrication of IR crystals.
