Contemporary methods of teaching creative Art is to allow the students to bring up their own creativity and instructors coaching or facilitating the students thus using learner-centered method of teaching makes it very educative.
First of all, I would teach my students to feel love for art and to be able to express it... then, I would lead them to better understanding of the means of expression in particular art (through active contact with art) and then I would create space for them to produce some kind of art...
David, think of flipping your class with the flipped classroom model and send students more videos to help encourage them or even have a practical feel of what is to be discussed the next day so that the will be better prepared
