central zoo authority of India maintains data for captive animals. The wildlife institute of India also maintains stud books for some endangered species. You may try writing to either institutes

I would check with the two largest institutions in the New World. These are:

Are you interested on data from the US only? If otherwise, you can contact other AZA sister organizations, such as EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria), PAAZA (the African one), or ARAZPA (the Australasian one). Also, if it is an endangered species that you are looking at and it is kept at zoos, they most probably will have a SSP (Species Survival Plan if in the US) or EEP (if in Europe) that keeps studbooks with demographic information (some are more detailed than others, but they do in general a very good job). If you could partner up with a zoo who is a member of ISIS (International Species Information System) that would be ideal.

The IUCN also has specialist groups for certain species or higher taxa that usually have access to those records.
