Some (less than 0.1%) small plants of potato in commercial field are still green at October (late harvest time), even after desiccant application. What can cause such deviation of normal growth?
Haulms (foliage) of the seed crop should be cut close from the ground.
It will attribute to higher yield due to the continuous translocation of photosynthates from tops to the tubers over a longer period of time, which will increase the size as well as number of tubers. This led to the suggestion that removal of haulms could be delayed advantageously to maintain yield and health standards of seed crop.
There are three methods of dehaulming viz., haulm cutting, haulm pulling and paraquat spray and researchers found that haulm pulling method was effective in reducing the virus incidence without affecting the yield whereas haulm cutting method provided reasonable chance to mechanically infect the healthy plants and also through vector upon re growth.
I faced such phenomenon. it seemed to be unreasonable for me and I occupy my mind thinking for an unusual reason. but simply its due to re-change of sink and source of plant. normally as harvest time arrives, potato corms become a strong sink, while green leaves are strong sources. when the corm plays the role of source, fortunate foliage start to grow...... I believe that while the potato corms feed to their highest capacity it will play the role of source and will regrow foliage.
This deviation of potato plants in commercial field percentage 0.1% , due to several things such : variation in the cultivated plants, Different varieties of potatoes have different Days To Maturity (DTM), Some environmental factor that produces an abnormal plant , different reaction to high temperatures, abnormalities in the potato due to water uptake and translocation
Percentages of plants witch infected with virus (or other pathogens) pass with stage of recovery and during these stages give more vegetation growth and will resist the other stress such drought
Studies have revealed that the molecular and metabolic response of plants to a combination of drought and heat is unique and cannot be directly extrapolated from the response of plants to each of these different stresses applied individually
Cold stress or drought, combined with high light conditions, result in enhanced production of ROS by the photosynthetic apparatus because these conditions limit the availability of CO2 for the dark
Potato plants grow well in soil with a pH value of between 5.0 and 6.5. Potatoes planted in soil with
pH levels lower than this will produce poor quality tubers and abnormal growth
I noticed about still green plants ( a small proportion) in field conditions; can we asume that it could be an effect of delay in sprouting in the earlier stage of development of plants ?
Also we can recongnize that must be another physiological factors, maybe some plant hormones delaying senescence.

Dear Sergio, I have saved some those plants and keep them at low temperature (+7-10oC) with light and normal humidity. They gave small aerial tubers in low part of stem in 5-10 cm above the soil level. I guess they may have deviated hormones level.
