It would help to get more info about exactly what will happen to the ACN. After the mechanical process be especially aware of 2 things: i) particles in the ACN; ii) the amount of water in the ACN.

To separate components (untargeted analysis) go for a temperature ramp of about 10 C/min in a low polarity column until its limit of operation. To start, keep it there for about 10 min. Run a full scan with EI ionization and use the library to start you with the identification of what comes out. Be careful with some compounds, for example long aliphatic molecules, as the identification through the library will often fail (they originate many fragments).

The analysis of the acetonitrile is not nearly as hard as the analysis of the impurities produced, which you don't mention. Hard to help you if you don't provide any information. To quote Rod's law, "The more you don't tell me the more I can't help you".

Mark Krause , Mário Silva, apologies for being vague in my question, my task at hand is sonicating pure acteonitrile and then analysing the sonicated sample to find how its composition has changed. Hence I figured that GC-MS would be the way to go. I already have NMR, FTIR and a few other analyses, which haven't yielded satisfactory insights.

Are you soicating an ACN+sample-mixture (ACN as a solvent / extraction)? What´s the analytes you want to detect? F.e, we did ACN ultrasonic extraction with soil for polyaromatic carbons, .... ACN itself goes very well with headspace.

Ironically I just ran ACN 3 weeks ago to see if we had contaminants in our UPLC MP. I ran it at 50C , Hold for 10 min and then ramped 2.5C/min to 100C. Then 15/min to 200C. I did see Diethyl Phthalate, a plasticizer.-Paul Dodson
