The purpose of storage for a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is just to reduce stress on the fuel cell from sudden changes in load, as such the storage requirement is quite small and ultra-capacitors have been shown to give good fuel economy while minimising stress on the fuel cell. There is not a requirement to carry around large batteries as there would be for a hybrid car that used a conventional IC engine power unit where the idea was not to emit any exhaust fumes in urban areas.
