Knowledge-centred way, while students are taught and encouraged to develop learning-autonomy. Both teachers and students have responsibility in this process... balance is everything.
I think its depend. Students are actually teachers of tomorrow and they have to teach just like teacher were learners/students in near fast. Learning must be according to the needs and requirement of the society which remain in the market for a long time.
I think that the methods you refer to -- 1) Teacher-centred learning: (2) Student-centred learning are deepley intertwined.Teachers are not there to only teach. While teaching they also learn, and students are not there either to only learm. By learning they also teach something to their teachers,
To my undertstanding, the big difference is between the traditional or conservative and the active methods. In contrast to what happens in the traditional and conservative methods, which aim at forming conformist people, in the active methods, teachers are more mentors and organizers of learning experiences and situations, such that their sudents come to undertand, reinvent an reconstruct everything they learn, than simple transmitters of ready made and established truths imposed on sudents from outside.
Learner/Student-centred learning is an appropriate method for many reasons, such as: it shifts the focus to the learners where their thoughts and opinions are encouraged to be shared during the teaching and learning process, It also can help to build social skills and self-esteem, and the students have an active role to play in their learning.
However, many drawbacks in this method are existed. For instance, It requires a longer time for students so it is difficult to achieve curriculum objectives, and It requires special skills of teachers so that not all teachers can use it positively.
Student-centred learning is appropriate when we are exploring a new course because at that time, teacher and students are themselves learning. However, for basic courses teacher-centred learning is required because that is more appropriate considering experience of teacher.
A fusion of the two methods is best. Priotizing of one method over the other relies on the level of pedagogical training of the teacher and the learning capabilities of the students.
