What are your thoughts on the claim that schools are so set apart, so isolated from the ordinary conditions and motives of life, that it is the one place in the world where it is most difficult to get experience? John Dewey claims this in his book «School and Society» in 1899. Is this still in many ways the case in our schools of 2019? Dewey claims experience is the mother of all dicipline.
Schools are the second most important locus for childhood experience. They are a microcosm of society. In schools we find friendship, animus, leadership, mentors, joys and griefs.
I think, for schools that are well funded, have well trained staff, and the ability to take students out for experiential learning as well as within the school, it's not true. However, schools that have none of those are indeed isolated from society. But for me, the purpose of a school is for students to figure out what they want which may be both a positive or a negative.
