This coming week is final test week at my school.
Final test week usually means not only test grading, but grading of many final papers and projects. How do you stay organized? How do you stay alert? With all that grading, how do you make sure you use he same criteria with everyone?
What are your strategies and tips for success?
Use TA or final papers and projects can be divided into small assignment across the semester so you won't have to grade all at the end.
In my opinion, the final everything is not as important as the progress students have made over the semester. I tend to evaluate them on their progress rather than just grade, essentially based on both quantitative and qualitative measurement.
For essay or short-answer questions, make sure you create a grading key of appropriate responses. Edit it as needed when grading papers, because some students will have very good answers that you did not anticipate. When that happens, review papers already graded. Prepare and stick to a grading schedule that allows a break between a given number of exams. Any unscheduled break in grading distracts you and it is like starting over. I always gave exams every 2 weeks and held the lab final at least 2-3 weeks before the final exam. Don't try to grade papers and other materials while you are doing exams. Get the other stuff out of the way first. I always graded all of the exams, because that tells you what the students are actually learning.

In the final week of class, i focus on two items: a research project paper (group/team) and the final exam consisting of essay questions, true/false and multiple choice. Team project grading process is not necessarily easier, but keeps you as a professor deeply involved and relevant as you work with each team separately. And the final exam essay questions are primarily based on case studies experience reviewed throughout the class session. It keep both students and professor's interest live and well!
