I have prepared CNF samples by CVD method. I have carried out TEM analysis to know the fiber diameters. From TEM analysis I observed that the fiber surface remained smooth. I want to perform HR-TEM to observe the external surface as well as the graphitic layers present in CNFs. Is it possible to get those information from HR-TEM?
HRTEM can directly determine the morphology transformations of such materials in the nanoscale. You can analyse covering layers, growth defects etc., compare for instance:

Using HRTEM you can visualize the morphology and the graphitic layers itself. We used HRTEM on CNFs to determine the layer spacing, the inclination angle between opposed graphitic layers and to show pertubations of these layers in single fibers. From our HRTEM results that were in line with measured Raman spectra we could evaluate the quality of the fibers. Unfortunately our observations are not published yet, but under review and thus close to publication ;-)
Yes, you can determine the morphology of the graphitic layers and the d spacing values.
you can compare the inter-layer spacing from HR TEM with those calculated from powder XRD, and Raman analysis and use the data to infer on the aliment of the fibers and the strain on the walls which may be related to the diameter of the fibers.
