i am conducting doctoral research on urban sprawl related to the Karachi. i am interested to calculate built up area in each year starting from 1975-2016. Either is it possible if yes how to obtain built up area.
You should be able to do this easily by analysing satellite images for the more recent years and if need be aerials for the earlier years. you might not get an annual level of granularity for the earlier part, but close it it after 2000
Consider talking to power companies and to the water board ...you might be able to use new lines as a proxy
Firstly, you can use NDISI (normalized difference impervious surface index) to extract impervious surface and you can visit the author's research gate: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Hanqiu_XU
Also, you can use nighttime data to extract the impervious surface, here is an example: Behind the rapid expansion of urban impervious surfaces in China:Major influencing factors revealed by a hierarchical multiscaleanalysis
Data on built areas are not usually recorded in censuses. I suggest you use areal sampling on air photos. See a small software to help on www-ohp.univ-paris-1.fr
