There was frequent rainfall during the season 2014-15 in North western part of India. Please give me the traits that need to be targeted during normal course of wheat breeding.
selection of genotype with solid stem and high spike would be good for development of lodging resistant cultivars in wheat . I think tissue mechanism plays major role to develop lodging resistant cultivars.
Plant height, dwarf or semi dwarf genotypes with High harvest index will be the best choice .... ( Khush G. S. (2001). Green revolution: the way forward. Nature Reviews Genetics, 2: 815-822) will be helpful
In general the big improvement in lodging comes with the use of semi-dwarf germplasm as mentioned earlier. However, there is great variation in this associated with cell flexibility (bend but don't break). Selection is most appropriate in nurseries designed to push the lodging threshold including high N and P with dense seeding and irrigation. One way to reduce lodging is to reduce spike size and weight which is not the goal for improving yield so one has to be careful about just using traits. Lodging is a problem of timely as well as late sown wheat crop.1.Root thickness and its deepness 2.Tissue flexibility and strength of Ist inter node, These traits may be helpful to screen out lodging tolerant genotypes.
