I'm not a fan of drug treatments, and so will give a few alternatives that worked for me. I came down with schizophrenia at age 20 and spent 15 years on psychiatric medications while trying to find a path to healing. The last five years I was weaning myself off of the medications (very slowly). Since March 2006 I've been completely medication-free without adverse symptoms. I'm writing from personal experience. I'm also a geoscientist and run a non-profit.
(1) Avocados. Consuming two to three avocados within about 15 minutes should have a palliative effect.
(2) Brie cheese. I found 1/2 lb. (0.25 kg) at one sitting to be a palliative amount.
(3) Olive oil. Two to three ounces should have a palliative effect.
In my experience, high-lipid foods:
(1) can have palliative effects.
(2) are safer than drug treatments.
(3) can be accessed easily by clients.
(4) can lead to empowerment and self-directed efforts at recovery.
Anxiety is a serious condition, and ought to be addressed strenuously. Note that the foods I've recommended as potential modes of interest need to be consumed in large quantities for the effect, i.e. about 3-4 times more than a person would normally consume, in a short amount of time.
Disclaimer: I'm not a medical doctor and the above is based only on my experience. What I've written is not intended to diagnose or treat any illness. I'm just sharing what has worked for me. Every person is unique. Clients ought not do anything that they do not feel comfortable with.
