Gerashchenko D, Okano Y, Urade Y, Inoué S, Hayaishi O. Strong rebound of wakefulness follows prostaglandin D2- or adenosine A2a receptor agonist-induced sleep. J Sleep Res. 2000;9(1):81-7.
In animal model infusion of adenosine agonist CGS21680 into the subarachnoid space induced slow wave sleep for the first 12 h of the night-time period, but did not induce sleep during the following 24 h of infusion, pointing to potential desensitization of adenosine receptors. Authors also reported on very severe rebound of wakefulness (almost complete insomnia) following the infusion.
