What are the threats posed by deepfakes to society? The use of deepfakes is posing a great threat to society. Though some use it positively, the negative use is posing a great danger. What are these threats and what should be done to curb these threats?
I agree that deepfakes can be entertaining (e.g. the remake of Terminator with Sylvester Stallone) but I am not entirely sure that this is really a positive use of the technology; it is just entertaining.
However, there are many thinkable applications of deepfakes that appear quite dangerous. I reckon that propaganda and misinformation are the most obvious threats, particularly in a time where credible news are disrespected as "fake news" and where trigger-happy politicians order extra judicial killings in between rounds of golf.

Regarding the question on what could be done on that, I see awareness raising as the most important issue. We all should be aware of the technical possibilities of altering photo, sound and video material .
I agree with Benni Thiebes . I think awareness of the issue is important, since this can encourage people to judge the validity of potentially altered forms of media better. However, it might also swing in the other way, it might lead people to believe what they want to believe and then disregard the rest based on their inert bias, which in full might enhance the polarity seen in societal issues. Instead, I would like to see high-security authentication inside the media (video, picture etc.) itself that cannot easily be faked. The media with authentication can therefore be trusted to a higher degree, in the same way that we use secure protocols and similar in other fields.
