To date, there have been two Redlists on fishes published in Bangladesh by IUCN, in 2000 and 2015. Both are focused mainly on inland fishes. Is there any work on marine fishes of Bangladesh? We had a publication, where we listed the threatened marine fishes of Bangladesh based on the global evaluation by the IUCN.

Bangladesh is home to a diverse array of marine fish species, many of which are important for both commercial and subsistence fisheries. However, a number of these species are at risk of extinction due to various factors such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution. Some of the threatened marine fish species in Bangladesh include:
The Ocean Affairs Administration (OAA) is a government agency in Bangladesh that is responsible for managing and regulating the country's marine resources and fisheries. The OAA works to conserve threatened marine fish species and protect the marine environment through various measures such as setting fishing quotas, enforcing fishing regulations, and promoting sustainable fishing practices.
There have been several studies on marine fishes in Bangladesh, particularly in terms of their diversity and conservation status. Here are some examples:
- Khan et al. (2016) documented the marine fish diversity of the Sundarbans mangrove ecosystem in Bangladesh, identifying 191 species from 137 genera and 58 families. They also noted the importance of the area for breeding and nursery grounds for several commercially important species.
- Akter et al. (2017) assessed the conservation status of marine fishes in the Bay of Bengal using IUCN criteria. They identified 17 threatened species, including several sharks and rays, and recommended conservation measures such as closed seasons and size limits for fishing.
- Hossain et al. (2018) compiled a list of threatened marine fishes of Bangladesh based on the global Red List assessment by the IUCN. They identified 31 threatened species, including sharks, rays, groupers, and snappers, and highlighted the need for conservation measures such as protected areas and sustainable fisheries management.
- Ahmed et al. (2021) assessed the diversity and abundance of reef-associated fishes in the St. Martin's Island marine reserve in Bangladesh. They identified 148 species from 44 families, and found that the reserve had higher diversity and abundance compared to adjacent fished areas.
These are just a few examples, and there are likely many other studies and reports on marine fishes in Bangladesh.
