As a PhD student in epidemiology I find that in addition to the Rothman book mentioned above, the book by Kahn and Sempos. "Statistical Methods in Epidemiology", is also a very good reference for mastering knowledge of epidemiology methods w/o having to have an advanced knowledge biostatistics. The two books complement each other as well, whereas Rothman's is more wordy, K&S's is a much straightforward reference for formulas and relevant statistical concepts.

I think that concepts of epidemiology - Raj Bhopal is a good book and suitable for the target students.

I think that Epidemiología Aplicada (in Spanish, Jokin de Irala) and Rotham are great options. But...my old book from Sackett (Clinical Epidemiology) is really good¡

to Applied Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

Charles Hennekens' 'Epidemiology in Medicine' is a good basic introduction to epidemiological concepts. A nice introduction to infectious disease epidemiology is 'Modern Infectious Disease Epidemiology' by Johan Giesecke. It looks like a new edition is due out in October. For stats, I like 'Essential Medical Statistics' by Kirkwood and Sterne. I also think all budding epidemiologists should read 'Rose's Strategy of Preventative Medicine', which is a beautifully written and important book.

Gordis, Epidemiology... The best.

Well, it depends on the background of your students. Basically, Epidemiology, 4th Edition, of Leon Gordis would be my recommendation for the beginners. Then, you can refer Epidemiology: Beyond the Basics of Moyses Szklo and Principles of Exposure Measurement in Epidemiology of Emily White. There are some other books but I don't remember their names exactly now. Cheers.

In addition to the major books highlighted above, we should also include latest research articles in our curriculum to teach students. Every book takes time to be revised and by the time a book gets into the market, the references become old.

Aschengrau and Seage ("Essentials of Epidemiology in Public Health") provides a solid introduction, particularly in connecting Epi to Public Health. I would agree with others to say that the most beneficial will be current journal articles. Too often there is a thought that journal articles are beyond the understanding of students, but this should not be the case, particularly in a post-graduate environment. Older, seminal pieces can provide a good background, and new, hot issues are easily attained. In addition, this provides students with examples of how to write articles, and what constitutes good research - something even a great textbook cannot do.

Book by Rothman and Greenland is the best.

Depends on the purpose. If this is a graduate program in epi, then Rothman. If you are teaching physicians and occupational health professionals to interpret the literature systematically, rather than to design their own studies, then may I suggest Chapter 3 of my book The Praeger Handbook of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. At 94 pages, the chapter is a self-contained, comprehensive overview of occupational epi just for this purpose.

Books by Rothman and Greenland and by Leon gordis are good lalitha kabilan

I used Gordis (Epidemiology) and Hennekens (Epidemiology in Medicine) in my MSc Epi and found both useful. We continue to recommend these text in our department's MSc Epidemiology programme. Rothman and Greenland's Modern Epidemiology is also very useful.

Besides Leon and Hennekens, I usually recommend Schelssman's 'Case-control studies: design, conduct and analysis' and Clinical Epidemiology by Fletcher and Fletcher to my students

Rothmans, Greenland and Lash is best. Szklo useful as supplementary text. The book by Leon Gordis by and large introduces the basic principles of epidemiology and may be useful as a bridging text to graduate students who had no prior experience with epidemiology.

The best text in the field

Depends on the level. Personally, I can only speak for the applications o epidemiology that I work in.

Basic Epidemiology is a solid and well-written introduction to the basics, as the title suggests, but only that. It does not pretend to be comprehensive or to take the student to an advanced level.

Modern Epidemiology, by Rothman and Greenland, is absolutely required reading and mastery for the serious epidemiologist interested in etiological (case-oriented) research. To get the most out of the book, however, it helps to have a working knowledge of the field first.

I also highly recommend Julie Cwikel's Social Epidemiology, in the tradition of John Cassel and his ground-breaking school of thought.

i read the text book of epidemiology " Epidemiology: Beyond the Basics" by  Moyses Szklo (Author), Javier Nieto (Author) and i suggest this book.

I gain new epidemiologic insights each time I open it.

My preferred book is Essentials of Epidemiology by Ann Aschengrau. This book is written by a pupil and along the way of thinking of Brian MacMahon who, years ago wrote the best books on epidemiology. This a book that teaches you, and makes yout think. Rothman is an exhaustive, reference book, but like most encyclopedias, it may lack depth.

Ken Rothman's, Modern Epidemiology (the bible of Epidemiology )

I suggest Epidemiology by Leon Gordis, a very good book and all basics have been cleared from this book. I strongly recommend this book for post graduate teaching.
