I am interested in airborne eDNA research and came across a study that uses polypropylene, a material commonly used in commercial masks. I am curious about the chemical stability of polypropylene when it interacts with substances used in DNA extraction and purification, such as proteinase, AL, ATL, ethanol, AW1 buffer, AW2 buffer, and AE buffer.

Dear Hyensoo Kim, polypropylene is an inert polymer, which means it doesn't form any interactions with other substances. This inertness comes from the fact that its structures is only bonds of C-C and C-H. There is only a slight difference in electronegativity between C and H, that doesn't make the bond polar. Another reason is that PP is a semicrystalline polymer. Crystallinity is another factor that brings stability. The destabilization appears only at elevated temperature, and possibly from additives (if any) such as stabilizers. PP test tubes are used for example in centrifuge, and daily lab routines.
