There are a number of genes 'associated' with UPEC including haemolysins, adhesins and iron acquisition systems. Many are shared across a range of Extra Intestinal E. coli (ExPEC) including neonatal meningitis (NMEC) and the avian pathogenic variants (APEC). A feature of ExPECS is their diversity of virulence genes, so using a panel of 10 genes or so by PCR is probably the best way forwards in the absence of anything specific
