Due to the complex processes that exist in the bio-degradation of hydrocarbons in compost piles or biopiles, the criteria of scaling applying the geometric similarity are very difficult to apply to maintain the actual operating conditions.
Shamsher S. Kanwar In bioremediation, applying the technology of biopiles, the microorganisms present in the soil are used to stimulate their growth by adding nutrients and volume agents to improve the oxygen supply in a natural way for their growth, but these conditions vary a lot from a laboratory scale to an industrial scale. The natural convection aeration is affected by the permeability of the pile. Many authors have developed different mathematical models based on different methods for the simulation of these processes in compost piles for subsequent validation through experimental practices and then their scaling, but I wanted to know if there were other criteria used by other authors or what specific method exists for the development of mathematical models that can adequately explain this process.
Biopile treatment is a full scale technology in which excavated soils are mixed with amendments, placed on a treatment area and bioremediated using forced aeration. The contaminants are reduced to carbon dioxide and water. This technique has been accepted as a cost -effective and environmental friendly means of clean up of contaminated lands. Optimization of field scale biopiles for bio-remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil has been successfully carried out. Sylvester Peter Antai In the literature, two types of biopiles are classified: the static ones with forced aeration and the elongated ones with aeration by manual turning or with machinery designed for that purpose. In our case we use the first option on a laboratory scale with a stage of optimization to improve the process, but the maintenance of these conditions studied on an industrial scale is very difficult, so the criteria necessary for the scaling of this technology are of great importance.
