Are there any norms and standards laid down by government of india or by any government worldwide for the safe disposal of used lubricating oil and metal cutting oils?
In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) prohibit disposal of hydrocarbons (including those used as cutting fluids) and lubricating fluids in the public water or in the soil. They have to be collected and incinerated.
Recent research efforts are directed towards the use of bio-degradable lubricating fluids and those free of toxic components. Also, there is an ongoing R&D effort to clean and recycle lubricating fluids compared to disposing them into the environment. Other efforts include use of Green Chemistry (environmentally-friendly chemicals) for synthesizing lubricating fluids.
