Chattering problem is one big challenge in practical point of view using sliding mode control. This topic is also very interresting to study.
Since chattering effect is viewed as one major problem in this field., it could be approximated in disturbance rejection problems. Disturbance rejection is viewed as a key problem in the MEMS area..
As far as I know, the so called sector sliding mode is a current and promising technique but still gives perspective for theorists. A particularly encouraging direction is the Tensor Product (TP) model transformation based sliding mode design. Check this paper for more details:
