There are several software for industrial design such as Catia, AutoCad , solidworks etc. But, I personally suggest you to use Solidworks.

Thanks. What makes Solidworks a better choice for packaging design?

There are two questions here. My answer to the first is Rhino 3D. Solidworks is in my experience more of an engineering package. As a nurbs modeling software, Rhino makes it very easy to design; easier than any other software I’ve used. When I taught ID at JMU I got the entire department to adopt Rhino. Rob Brady, an internationally recognized designer (robrady.com) used Solidworks, Pro-E and others and eventually moved to Rhino for Design Because of this inherent flexibility to quickly manipulate solids.

I use it for Yacht, furniture and architecture and used it for most everything you see at http://coroflot.com/mwilson ... except for the hospital, as it was designed before Rhino existed.

I’ve also used Rhino for packaging design, but it clearly not made for this. Adobe Illustrator IS made for this ... there are others. I personally used an older version of Macromedia Freehand (very similar to Illustrator), which is also specifically made for graphic design.

I agree with Mark, when he says Rhino 3D is one of the best in Industrial Design. I've used it for years in many different projects and products, packaging included. Rhino is so easy to use, even when you don't know it. It's easy to learn, and very important (in most of cases) is cheaper than most of the CAD software alternatives.

But, when you think in graphic packaging design and its details, Illustrator, Photoshop and other graphic software are more pertinent to do that.

Many thanks for your helpful and detailed comments. So if I want to turn my packaging sketches into professional 2D and 3D designs (for example a bottle, the bottle in a box, the box on a shelf, etc.), I should learn Rhino…and to create graphical details of the package label, Illustrator is useful

I’d say yes. The learning curve is pretty short as Rhino is very intuitive. In a few weeks my students were doing pretty good work. Also ... you can print the 3D bottle in 2D and then scan (take a picture with you phone) and reproduce it in Illustrator. This way you can perfectly recreate the appearance of the letters curving around the bottle.

Professor Wilson, since you are an industrial designer and a business developer, I’d like to ask your opinion about the key success factors of a “Food Packaging Design Company”.

What’s your first image of such a company?

What are the prerequisites? What do I need to take into account if I want to create this business?

Who are the specialists that should be included in the team?

What are some elements that may help such a startup get known and influence the international market? How can I make it winning, unique and different from the other companies in this field? ...

Here are some thoughts you might consider.

Ultimately, any design work is about achieving the goals of the client. The desire we have to do something new and innovative or socially acceptable by our peers, tends to shift the focus away from achieving the goals of the client to achieving our own goals (e.g. recognition, design awards, etc.). It may seem obvious, but this simple fact is often overlooked.

Since packaging has a huge impact on the success of a company‘s priduct, and ultimately their business, the branding aspects of the project will be critical to their success. Because of this, I think it is very important to have three key people.

1) A skilled graphic designer (of course)

2) A marketing expert

3) A branding expert.

The marketing expert will take the packaging design that has been developed with the expertise of the branding expert and test it with consumers. The response from the consumers is measurable. You will be able to show your clients with data why one design and marketing approach is better than another.

With this team, you will have three significant advantage.

1). Your design work will be more effective and consequently more successful for the client.

2). You’ll get more work because some clients may have designers, but won’t have the other experts theybneed to develop the proper messaging.

3). By doing work that serves clients more effectively, you’ll enjoy greater success and attract more clients.

As a business consultant, that’s about all the free advice I can give. I would be happy to continue to assist further on some sort of agreed upon retainer, but my time is pretty short currently.

Rhino and Solid Works are softwares for structural design. If you are interested in packaging systems design, I suggest you the software Cape Pack.

I vote for Rhino too.

I agree both Solidworks and Rhino are excellent options! Also, Autodesk products like 3DMax and Fusion360 could be very useful as well!

If you are going to use existing packaging solutions I would recommend checking out abobe dimension cc. They have a library of different finished modeled packages and you could also render in that software.

If modelling from skratch I would have used solidworks/inventor, but if you are new to 3D modelling, fusion 360 might be a better option.

I recommend Solidworks. In the 2018 version, it is equipped with Solidworks Composer & Solidworks Visualize that allow you to clearly explain and present your products to support your business & research.

It depends on your purpose and the area of your work, I prefer to work with CATIA but solidworks is OK too and is much easier than CATIA. You can use AutoCad but i Do not recommend to you.

It depends on the type of packaging component being designed (material, manufacturing process, printing method, etc.) and the development phase (early concepts, refinement, control documentation, etc.). For example:

- Rhinoceros (for concept exploration and dielines)

- SolidWorks, Catia, Inventor (for assemblies and part design refinement)

- KeyShot (for rendering)

- Esko Suite

- ArtiosCAD (for dielines)

- Studio (for rendering)

- CAPE (for palletization, truck load, etc)

- Adobe CC (Illustrator, Photoshop) (for artwork and mapping)
