I think in order to in-cooperate values in our teachings, it should be an on-going activity that is done by the teacher during the teaching and learning process. The effective way that a teacher is able to do it is through his/her activities with the students or through the activities that the teacher carefully organised or design to achieve a particular value ( with an awareness to promote that particular value beforehand). The teacher should be the most important agent to ensure the success of promoting any values among students.         

I completely agree with what Marzita told. The teacher in India is called as "ACHARYA", which means a person who leads through actions. Apart from that Idea, sharing my little knowledge,

Value is something that is not be taught but to be followed. The value education starts from the parent who sends the child to the school to the driver who takes him back to home. Each and every person associated with the school should follow the values which need to be inculcated in the student. The strategies which could be adopted for the following are:

1. Give periodical training to all the non-teaching staff and contract workers associated with the school.

2. Make teachers role model and encourage them to lead a life of good value.

3. Once in every semester the teacher should visit the students home and build in good relation with his parents to discuss about his life style.

4. The syllabus of study should include a glance of all universal religions, through stories which keeps the child glued.

5. The national and local heroes should always be projected and their biography and actions need to be discussed and highlighted regularly.

6. The respect that a student has towards his teacher reflects the intensity of the values he absorbed. This need to be nurtured.

7. There should a monthly progress report made which reflects the progress of character traits that he possesses. An instrument for character test can be used for this.

 Hello Distinguished Professors, Prof. Singh, thank you for the wonderful article. There is "teaching good values" and there is allowing students to "learn good values" and so I offer another way. Go back to the classics: teach students to unpack the great philosophers of our time. For younger students, give them some simple proverbs to learn valuable lessons from and for even younger students, classic short stories with value lessons in them, and then, yes, as my colleague above shared, the effectiveness of discussion is so underplayed in education. I believe it is because too often teachers wish to "plan" their day and learning periods into "timed sessions" and discussions leave us wondering how much time to plan for when holding them. That should not tie us into a corner or a situation where we avoid them. Get those student chairs in a circle and watch the magic! For older students, Confuscious, Aristotle. Have some conversations and you can plan one part -- the thought-provoking questions for after the readings. Have them write their own philosophies. Give them some of the classics to allow them to learn to think beyond the surface and then, see what they will teach you.

Hi, you could also look at the work of the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues at the University of Birmingham, UK, for examples and resources on teaching virtue. As with any dispositional teaching strategies there are four steps, ensuring students understand the virtue, creating the climate in the school/classroom for it to flourish, using teaching strategies that encourage practice and transfer, and developing student ownership of the virtue. But all seek to integrate and educate the person in a proper and consistent scale of values. Here are my top three

1. the values must be clearly stated

2. leadership's behavior must model these values

3. they must be celebrated on a regular basis with faculty, students, staff and administrators top performer recognized. .  

In the Netherlands there has been a wide and deepening duscussion about this subject, but alas the literature is mostly in dutch. Values in education and education in Values is studied e.g. by prof. J.A. van der Ven espacially religious education and the use and necessity of value education throughout the whole school.The human values foundation, despite its name are the publications also in dutch, gives a wide example of lessons and implementation of education values in the primary school and the first three years of the secondary school. There is a more accesible model in English  Values Education by Le Moyne College in Syracuse (VS). "Compass for uncharted lives. A model for values education"  Donald Kirby is one of the developers of the model used by Le Moyne College.

I find interesting the idea of school as a community. I think this may be the way to answer your question.

You might be interested in the work of Lawrence Kohlberg and subsequently Carole Gilligan's critique of Kohlberg. Some of the more modern work on Kohlberg reconciles some of his early problems, especially gender. In terms of a strategy, the Kohlberg dilemmas, in my experience, have been very useful, practical tools in the classroom.

Learning from examples would be the best. Just like teaching our own kids, we don't tell them what to do or what not, but we should show them by practicing what we want them to be.

In elementary school, teaching morals and values is done through literature. Reading stories, fables and fairy tales with lessons. Seminar discussion allows students to respond and discuss lessons and values and how they relate in our society.

Literature has always been a good strategy for the analysis of values, compare them with our lives and raise a dialogue that promotes education in values. This is very true in the nursery and primary school, but it is equally valid in secondary education? And in higher education? What strategies can be applied?

Hi Fernando, in higher education many universities in the UK are encouraging students to engage in extra-curricular activities to promote values of citizenship, self-awareness and collaboration etc. Sometimes these are incorporated into award schemes that recognise students' achievements, see Bournemouth University's Student Development Award,  for example.

Most of these schemes in UK universities are linked to developing students' employability, in response to employers' demands that graduates demonstrate 'character'.

i remember, when i presented my article on professional dental ethics at malasia conference, someone pointed out that its too late to incorporate values at undergraduate level. the values are taught and inculcated at school level. following strategies do help:

1. the transfer of cognitive knowledge at different levels

2. teaching by practicing as role model

3. learning by doing / applying

4. value based culture at institution

5. incentives and awards on development of value based character

6. peer reflection or ignorance on valueless attitude

I believe that to educate in values at school there are some strategies that are more effective: a) Define a model or paradigm that is adequate and coherent to the reality of the center; b) Make a plan that brings together the desired values in the center; c) Carry out training and prevention as a team; d) Receive institutional support from the center's authorities; e) Take the appropriate measures; f) Create and use specific materials and resources; g) Give the members of the educational community the prominence that corresponds to them; h) Carry out a follow-up and evaluation of the established values education plan; i) Develop improvements in the following periods.

Considero que para educar en valores en la escuela hay algunas estrategias que son más efectivas: a) Definir un modelo o paradigma adecuado y coherente a la realidad del centro; b) Realizar un plan que aglutine los valores deseados en el centro; c) Realizar formación y prevención en equipo; d) Recibir apoyo institucional de las autoridades del centro; e) Tomar las medidas adecuadas; f) Crear y utilizar materiales y recursos específicos; g) Dar a los miembros de la comunidad educativa el protagonismo que les corresponde; h) Realizar un seguimiento y evaluación del plan de educación en valores establecido; i) Desarrollar las mejoras en los perídos siguientes.

In my Idea, schools could promote Values Education through nurturing in their students the ten priority values and attitudes: "Perseverance", "Respect for Others", "Responsibility", "National Identity", "Commitment", "Integrity", "Care for Others", "Law-abidingness", "Empathy" and "Diligence".

I suggest we teach the following 7 values to create peace and harmony in societies: democracy, equality, peace, empathy, cultural diversity, human rights, and social justice
