I have 5 sets of coated samples and my intention is to determine the average pore size of the coating for each of them. The sample under examination is a IJP coating of YSZ material on porous alumina. SEM images appear to show small pits(which are not pores) and open pores. I have tried image analysis using imageJ to get an average pore size figure, but thresholding of image did not give accurate results.
Is there a software which could be used to directly take out an average pore size value. If not, are there any other methods?
Any help/suggestion is much appreciated.

You can try Archimedes Principle if it work.
for this you have to calculate the the density of (1)substrate alone and and (2) substrate + coating. As you will be knowing the theoretical densities of both of the things (as full densed state) the decrease in the amount of density will be the porosity and can easily be converted back to the volume (volume occupied by pores).
Adjust the threshold in the imageJ to eliminate/magnify the pores location, then you should be able to calculate the porosity.
I think it is better to analyze and measurement of the BET data to get information about the porosity and pore size of this system.
I agree with Md. Abdur Rahman as the BET will give you the approximately the exact value of porosity and the pore size of the system.
