We are working on a project named "Solid Waste Management". In-view of this, we would like to design a sanitary land fill. So we want to know its limitations, applicability, merits and demerits.
1. If properly designed and operated, sanitary landfill will prove the best method for MSW disposal.
2.The organic material can be segregated and used as compost and all recyclable materials can also be separated before final close of sanitary landfill.
3.Aesthetically land can be reclaimed and used as park or Green place after completion of the landfill.
Demerits-
1. If not designed properly or operated properly, it may cause many concerns.
2.The important impact is release of landfill gases may give rise to green house effects and the landfill gases are capable of producing odour and dangerous and unsafe health conditions.
3. If cover system is not proper, there are all chances that leachate might get entry in the sub soil and make the under ground water polluted.
Nowadays there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages in relation to landfilling process although this is one of the main method used for final disposal of solid waste (here i also consider dumpsites).
Your question is a bit complex and this depends a lot on which type of waste you are talking about. For instance in some countries like Sweden organic waste is forbidden to be disposed in landfills and this needs to be recovered as energy or compsting/fertilizer material back to the farms. So just to give an example on how it depends of which type of waste and which rules and laws you have.
As others said here it is a good way of disposing solid waste when well controlled leachate and also gas emissions but on the other hand it can cause severe impacts to environmental and human health. Another issue is that nowadays we are discussing a lot about circular economy and a major part of materials going to the landfills could be recovered as energy or material itself and this is one demerit.
I would say that landfllls for hazardous waste can have more merits in this case since it is a good way to block the exposure of such contaminated masses in relation to humans and environment.
Thank you very much for your answer which is very clearly explained. But I feel that if we have excess amount of organic matter than required for installed capacity of the plant, we can have landfills at small scale.
