I need an experimental recommendation.
What are the markers that show the differentiation between “inflammatory” and “non-inflammatory” phagocytosis by phagocytes?
Or, is there a specific method can separate “inflammatory phagocytosis vs non-inflammatory phagocytosis”?
Hi, I think it depends on which stimulus and phagocyte receptor(s) are involved in the phagocytosis process.
For instance, uptake of malaria-infected red blood cells through an innate receptor (CD36) on macrophages induce very little pro-inflammatory TNF but if the infected cells are taken up via Fcgamma receptors, then higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines will be produced.
In my opinion, the distinction is rather artiificial. Phagocytosis performed by speciazlized cells (be it polymorphonualear or mononuclear phagocytes) plays virtually one and the same functional role irrespective of systemic response which it is a part of: pathological one like inflammatiion or normal physiological defense (for instance, pulmonary phagocytosis of deposited inhaled particles).
