Because of its good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance property, it is often chosen for reinforcement particles. In addition, it depends upon the matrix type where reinforcements are done.
nowadays, TiC introduced as a superior candidate for improving mechanical properties of kinds different tools wear and cermets. TiC can be used as substrate or coating . The reasons might be as follows:
1- High modulus (410-450 Gpa)
2-High vickers hardness (29-34 Gpa)
3-High electrical conductivity (39×10⁶ S/Cm)
4-High melting temperature (3067C°)
5-Low friction coefficient
6-Perfect chemical stability
7-Good wetability
Because of high wetability of TiC, it can easily match with matrix i.e Al and Fe
A356 contains 7% Si . Therefore, there is a possibility for undesirable interface reaction between TiC and Al alloy if the processing involves much high temperature and processing time
Contamination of TiC with oxygen can be a big issue when added to melting. However, Al-TiC has many application due to high mechanical properties .e.g high wear resistance
